2021 Workforce Mindset® Study

Alight’s Workforce Mindset® Study examines a range of workplace topics such as the employee experience, cultural characteristics and differentiators, total rewards, communication and technology. In this year’s study of 2,501 U.S. employees, a large part of our focus takes into account the fact that the research was conducted in July 2020, in the thick of the COVID-19 pandemic and immediately following the rise of racial and social justice demonstrations.

We explore new areas such as perceptions of the employer response to COVID-19, the impact of more remote work and furloughs, and the increased attention on social justice and its impact in the workplace.

The employee experience (EX) is holding steady but employees are less willing to recommend their employers and are rethinking their future.

Outside of furloughs, perceptions of the employer response to COVID-19 are generally positive but employees remain concerned about their health at the workplace.

7 in 10 say their employer has responded well to employee needs (though lowest rated of an organization's stakeholder groups)

47% of employees say actions taken related to COVID-19 make them feel better about their employer

Of those who are primarily remote due to COVID, 85% are at least moderately interested in continuing to work remotely if given the opportunity.

In 2020, more employees view social purpose as important, but are mixed in how employers responded to the recent demonstrations — but important segments differ dramatically.
