An annual benchmarking report that examines employers’ financial benefit focus areas for the upcoming year, based on survey responses from roughly 250 employers covering nearly nine million workers.
By reviewing the trends in this report, employers can benchmark their plan offerings against those of other companies and craft their own plan benefits to better align with their overall objectives.
This report is a summary of defined contribution plan data on employee savings, withdrawal and investing behavior from more than 125 plans covering over three million eligible participants. Beyond overall averages for key measures, additional demographic data is also provided where available by age, gender, tenure and industry. Given the breadth and depth of this data, this information may be useful for plan benchmarking purposes.

This survey has been conducted every two years since 1991 to gain a better understanding of employer trends related to retirement plan offerings, design, and investments. The 2015 survey was completed by 367 employers across a variety of plan types, sizes, and industries. For the purposes of this survey, the term “defined contribution plans” includes 401(k), profit sharing, 403(b), 401(a), and 457(b).
The plans included in this survey have a combined total of more than 10 million employees and over $750 billion in assets. Twenty-three percent of the Fortune 500 is represented in this report.
